Thomas Ogden

Thomas Ogden, MD, published his internationally acclaimed novel, The Parts Left Out, in 2014. He has subsequently published two novels: The Hands of Gravity and Chance and This Will Do …

These novels, along with thirteen books of psychoanalytic essays and literary criticism, have been published in more than twenty-five languages. He practices psychoanalysis in San Francisco where he teaches both psychoanalysis and creative writing.

  • It is a wondrous mystery to read the stories of Thomas Ogden. He creates living characters out of the air. Each becomes utterly real to me, and I feel I have always known them. Maybe they resemble people I have encountered briefly or cared for, or perhaps they embody hidden aspects of myself. Regardless, I care deeply about their fates, and I learn from their unpredictable journeys.

    — Matthew Zapruder, author of I Love Hearing Your Dreams and Story of a Poem

For me, the great joy of reading Ogden begins with the company of Ogden’s pellucid mind and vast compassionate heart—of listening in while a master explores the craft of listening itself, the art of hearing and feeling with infinite attunement. But the pleasure of reading Ogden soars, like that of all fine literature, on pure storytelling. From the first page to the last, in this marvelous new collection, I felt swept forward as if in a dream not unlike life—mysteriously compelling and always unmistakably true. Odgen’s characters, including husbands and wives and a girl who lives in language, are deeply familiar, as are the questions haunting them all: Who are we, really, to one another? By what laws of chemistry do certain feelings germinate across decades before blossoming into light?

Daniel Duane, author of A Mouth Like Yours, A Novel (Farrar, Straus & Giroux).

In his latest work of fiction, Aunt Birdie and Other Stories, Thomas Ogden creates an array of fragile yet strong characters. With unflinching honesty and keen perception, Ogden’s stories are tinged with the regret, hope, loss, and self-doubt of people reflecting on the past as they strive to do the best they can in the present. Steeped in wisdom, and with a touch of nostalgia, Aunt Birdie and Other Stories is a thoughtful collection boldly told.
