Empires Crumble, Episode 24 (Early release: Video and Audio)
As an additional benefit for supporters of Another World, we’re happy to offer to you early access to the podcast, Empires Crumble, from Alley Valkyrie and Rhyd Wildermuth.
This episode, entitled “The Needle and the Damage Done,” is a 90 minute in-depth discussion about the foundation of Global Capitalism: international distribution by shipping container. The blockage of the Suez Canal by the container ship “Ever Given” highlighted for the world our reliance on a thin canal across a strip of land in the Middle East, itself the “spine” of capitalist production and consumption.
Expanding upon Alley Valkyrie’s recent essay published at Another World, this episode covers a wide range of effects and consequences of this system (including the rise of nationalist populism in the United State), as well as the historical events which led to the creation of the canal and this shift to globalized manufacture.
The episode is available in multiple formats. It can be listened to directly from the audio player below, or downloaded for later listening on any device. In addition, the video recording of the podcast (a little shorter due to a technical problem) can be watched just below the audio player.
The audio version of the podcast releases to the public on 7 June, 2021 and can also be listened to after that date via Spotify, iTunes, Soundcloud, and Stitcher.
